The local pastors arranged for Dr. J. Frank Norris, pastor of First Baptist Church of Fort Worth, Texas, to hold a tent revival in Denton. The meeting led to the organization of the Fundamental Baptist Tabernacle. In 1938 the Church name was changed to Central Baptist Church. The church was located on Bolivar Street in downtown Denton. In 1950 the Church played an important role in the formation of the Baptist Bible Fellowship International by hosting the organizational meeting. In 1959 the Church moved to its present location at 2221 North Carroll Blvd.
Central Baptist Church has been blessed to have many faithful men Bonner, Renfro, Peak, Johnston, and Bradley. In 1944 the Church called Dr. Loys Vess as its pastor. Following Dr. Vess, Rev. Lester Singleton was called in 1953. After 28 years of ministry, Bro. Singleton retired and Central Baptist Church called six pastors over the next 24 years. These included Rev. James Campbell (1981), Rev. Alton Byrd (1983), Rev. Skip Bowman (1985), Rev. Ernest Sigrest (1989), Rev. Brent Anderson (1990), Rev. Gary D. Cox (1996), and in 2005 the church called our current pastor, Rev. Paul Shelton.
